NERDY BALLET QUESTIONS
Tell us about your dance background and training:
I started dancing in a very small studio in Ridge Manor, Florida with Debbie Harris. I danced there until I was 9, and was very passionate about jazz. After that, my family moved to Thomasville, Georgia, and I began studying ballet more seriously at South Georgia Performing Arts. I still really loved jazz, but the school was very strong in ballet. I joined their pre-professional ballet company, South Georgia Ballet, and also had the opportunity to learn dances from the Rockettes. I danced there until 2005, when my family moved again to Ruckersville, VA (shortly after we moved to Louisa, VA) and I took classes at Wilson School of Dance. My love of ballet really developed when I started studying with Ariadne Conner (the co-founder of Charlottesville Ballet). Her choreography was very flowing and it was actually fun to dance! In the summer of 2008, I was one of 25 dancers in Virginia chosen to attend the Residential Summer Governor’s School for dance for a month. In 2009, I was invited to join Charlottesville Ballet as the first apprentice, and I am now a full-time company member this year.
What genres of dance do you enjoy?
Of course ballet, but I also jazz and occasionally tap.
What kind of pointe shoe do you wear?
Capezio Glisse’s.
Do you have a favorite ballet:
It’s going to sound very cliche, but I’m going to have to say The Nutcracker. It reminds me of Christmas and all-day Saturday rehearsals =)

What’s your favorite ballet/dance step:
Pirouettes– gotta love those turns!
Tell us, why do you dance?
Well, I started because my parents put me in dance classes when I was about 4 years old. But I think I stuck with it because it was fun, especially in the early days where I took a lot of jazz (I couldn’t stay interested in ballet when I was younger). It really just became a part of me. I’m always dancing around everywhere, and without it I’m just lost. I also feel as though I’m not very good at expressing my emotions, so I can really show them through dance.
OTHER
What other jobs/activities/academic pursuits are you involved in? I am a full-time student at Piedmont Virginia Community College and plan to transfer later to pursue my teaching degree (I’d like to become an elementary school teacher). I’m a bit of a work-a-holic and hold a couple of different jobs outside of dancing. I am a jazz and creative dance teacher at The Dance Barn in Stanardsville, VA. I also teach jazz classes at the Boars Head Inn in the fitness center, where I also work a floor position (I fold towels and clean some of the machines). As if that weren’t enough, I’m a waitress at an Italian restaurant called Ragazzi’s….I also sleep occasionally =)
What other talents or passions do you have? I really enjoy choreographing. I’m working on some choreography for the dance program at PVCC, and hopefully will get to show my work on Charlottesville Ballet one day. Through out high school, I really enjoyed acting and if I had anymore time I would like to get into it again. I also enjoy singing at the top of my lungs in the privacy of my car!
Anything else you’d like to express: I can’t wait to see what Charlottesville Ballet has in store for us this year!

Our Monthly “MEET THE ARTIST” Series- MEGAN GIROIR

THE BASICS
Name: Megan Ashley Giroir
Age: 23
Astrological Sign: Leo
Hometown: Columbia, Connecticut
Role in C’ville Ballet: Company Member
FAVORITES…
Food: I guess I’d have to say sushi or Mexican, although I definitely have a sweet tooth- especially for chocolate!
Color: Blue
Book: Oddly enough, I would have to say that my favorite is this really old book of Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales. I remember reading it with my parents when I was little and I always picked it up when I couldn’t sleep. I still grab it every once in a while. Nothing beats the old-school, slightly creepy fairy tales.
Movie: Walk the Line
Quotation: “Dance like no ones watching.” If you are not dancing for yourself with emotion and passion, it doesn’t matter how beautiful your lines or feet or arms are; no one is going to want to watch you. It’s something I remind myself every time I perform.
Spot in C’ville: Having only been in C’ville for three weeks now, I haven’t had too much time to explore. But I have to say sitting in the Downtown Mall enjoying a casual brunch and the nice weather was very relaxing- definitely one of my favorite spots so far!
Business/Store in C’ville: Brixx’s Wood Fired Pizza at Barracks Road Shopping Center. I work there as a server and I have to say the pizzas they make are delicious!
NERDY BALLET QUESTIONS
Tell us about your dance background and training:
Both of my parents were professional ballet dancers so I got a very early start. When I was young I trained at Hartford Ballet, which later became Dance Connecticut. After graduating from high school, I continued my dance education at Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre in its Graduate/Pre-professional division. I had excellent training in classical ballet but also enjoyed classes in everything from jazz, modern, character, flamenco and almost anything else you could imagine in the world of dance. I’ve been lucky enough to work with alot of amazing teachers and choreographers during my training. After leaving Pittsburgh, I began my professional career with Ballet Theatre of Maryland as an apprentice. I spent three seasons with the company dancing various roles. This is my first year with Charlottesville Ballet and am loving it so far!
What genres of dance do you enjoy?
I am a complete “bun head” at heart and love classical ballet, however, I have found that contemporary ballet works are my favorite to perform. I feel like they can be so much more thrilling and music-driven. I love doing both and having the balance of the old school classics and the slightly edgier contemporary pieces. The balance definitely keeps me thinking and working on dancing my best.
What kind of pointe shoe do you wear?
Bloch Axioms with a Strong Shank. I’ve tried a few others lately but always favor these.
Do you have a favorite ballet:
My favorite ballet would have to be Balanchine’s Allegro Brillante. I was lucky enough to be able to perform it when I was training in Pittsburgh. The work is pure classical ballet at its finest: beautiful to watch and so exciting to perform. It is also one of the most challenging ballets I’ve ever worked on.

What’s your favorite ballet/dance step:
I love pirouettes of any kind! Turning always provides a challenge and even though it’s not the easiest step to master, the feeling you get once you nail a turn perfectly is amazing.
Tell us, why do you dance?
I dance because I love it. Dance allows me to express myself no matter what I need to express. Whether it’s happiness, anger or frustration dancing is my way of getting it all out. Dancing allows me to constantly focus on improving my technique and artistry and I love that I will always be able to keep working and strive for perfection.
OTHER
What other jobs/activities/academic pursuits are you involved in? I just started working as a server at Brixx Wood Fired Pizza on Barracks Road. I would love to further my education by going back to school when my schedule and budget allow it, but right now I’m focused on dancing. For the moment, I’m just enjoying living in Charlottesville and meeting new people in town and of course dancing with Charlottesville Ballet.
What other talents or passions do you have? I love reading and am glad to have a little more free time this year to knock out some of the books on my “want to read” list. I really enjoy Pilates and would love to work towards getting certified in both mat and reformer work.
Anything else you’d like to express: I’m so excited to be in the company this year. The whole company has such great energy and attitude– it’s so refreshing and creates such a nice work enviroment. I think this young company can do great things if we continue to work for it!

Age: 23
Astrological Sign: Aquarius
Hometown: Arlington, VA
Role in C’ville Ballet: Company Member
FAVORITES…
Food: Italian food is my favorite in general, especially basil and pesto dishes. I also love trying different types of cheeses accompanied by red wine. Some of my favorite desserts are apple pie a la mode, cheesecake, and tiramisu.
Color: Mainly lilac, but I go through phases of liking other colors too.
Animal: Bunny rabbits!

Book: I am a huge fan of Dan Brown novels (The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, and The Lost Symbol), the Harry Potter series, and Stieg Larsson’s books The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and The Girl Who Played with Fire. I can’t wait to read the third book. I am currently reading Andre Agassi’s book, Open, and absolutely love it.
Movie: I love so many movies for so many different reasons, but my favorite classics are Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Singing in the Rain, and Easter Parade. Then I really enjoy watching Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants I and II, Pretty Woman, Moulin Rouge, and James Bond movies. I can’t leave out the chick flicks either– I love them all.
Quotation: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, but learning to dance in the rain.” I also enjoy “Life beats down and crushes the soul; art reminds you that you have one.”
Spot in C’ville: I just moved here, but so far have really enjoyed walking on the Downtown Mall, especially when there are live bands playing.
Business/Store in C’ville: I haven’t been all around C-ville yet, but can tell I am really going to enjoy trying all of the different places to eat in the area. So far I have had brunch (my favorite meal) at The Nook and thought it was absolutely delicious. I really enjoyed getting to sit outside too.
NERDY BALLET QUESTIONS
Tell us about your dance background and training:
I started dancing when I was 6 and didn’t like dance at first, because I wanted to play outside. When I saw my older sister performing in the show I would have been in, I had my mom enroll me for classes the next day and haven’t stopped since. I was trained at the Washington School of Ballet, which was extremely classical with tastes of contemporary, jazz, and modern. I was a part of musicals too and loved getting to combine acting with dancing, but was not so talented in the singing area. I attended Marymount of Manhattan in NYC for a year, but their Dance Department was very focused on modern. While the emphasis on modern techniques helped me expand my knowledge, I found my true passion was ballet. I then moved to Pennsylvania to transfer toMercyhurst College, which was more classically concentrated. Even though the dance program was based in ballet, I still got to dance all genres and had the opportunity to perform a huge range of choreography. I think coming from a ballet background has enabled me to learn many different styles of dance and I am always excited to learn new, challenging types of choreography. I also studied abroad in Amsterdam in the summers of 2006 and 2007. It was an intensive that was run by Valerie Valentine from the Dutch National Ballet, which included many of her friends from the company and many leading dancers and teachers from Europe. In the final performance, I got to perform with dancers from the Dutch National Ballet. This YouTube video is from a piece called “Ghanwa Bossanova” I performed in Amsterdam, choreographed on us by Maurice Causey from Nederlands Dans Theater.

Amsterdam stands as my most exciting dance experience and I hope to get the opportunity to dance in Europe again someday.

What genres of dance do you enjoy?
My favorite genre is ballet, but I am really interested in contemporary styles as well. Generally, I have found that I enjoy all genres of dance when the choreographer inspires me and teaches me new ways of approaching dance and performing.
What kind of pointe shoe do you wear?
I wear Capezio Glisse Es Pro 8M.
Do you have a favorite ballet:
There are so many amazing ballets; it’s challenging to have to pick just one! I love George Balanchine’s work and one of my favorite pieces is Jewels. I think the dynamics of music, grace, speed, and coloring is the perfect combination. Check out segments of the work performed by Pacific Northwest Ballet:

My favorite Balanchine piece that I was was fortunate enough to perform was Valse Fantaisie. It is exquisite from beginning to end with the music and the intensity. It was definitely the most challenging and rewarding piece I have been a part of.

What’s your favorite ballet/dance step:
I love pique turns, especially in a manège (a circle around the outside of the room or stage).
Tell us, why do you dance?
I dance simply because it makes me happy. My parents have always told me that I should do what makes me happy. When I dance– whether it is painful, frustrating, grueling, tedious, sweaty, or time consuming– I somehow always finish with feelings of happiness and gratification that make me want to do it again the next day. Dance has been a large part of my life for as long as I can remember; it has definitely sculpted the person that I am today. I don’t really know what it would be like not to dance, but I have an inkling that I would feel like something was missing. From endless strengthening exercises in class, to rehearsal, to stretching, to performing– I love every aspect of it!
OTHER
What other jobs/activities/academic pursuits are you involved in? I just started working at the Mellow Mushroom on the corner, which has been great fun so far. It will be my first serving job. This past year I have been active taking pilates and hope to become certified this fall in pilates mat classes. I hope to go to graduate school someday, but at the moment am enjoying just dancing.
What other talents or passions do you have? When I have the time and a partner, I enjoy playing tennis. I love being outside and tennis is a great way to combine physical activity and pleasure. Sometimes I wish there could be a dance studio outside. I also love being in, on, or near a body of water- it’s very calming and soothing. Lastly, I have a talent for organizing anything and everything. I can’t help it!
Anything else you’d like to express: I’m very excited to start my first season with C-ville Ballet!

NERDY BALLET QUESTIONS
Tell us about your dance background and training:
I trained in ballet for ten years before discovering modern dance as a teen.  I studied modern and ballet and spent a lot of my time choreographing in high school, but my main interest was musical theater.  In college I started teaching dance at a local studio and loved it, and realized that teaching and performing on the local level was what I wanted to do with my life.  My full bio can be found here: http://www.dancebarn.net/faculty.html
What genres of dance do you enjoy? I like modern and ballet best, followed by jazz and theatre dance, tap, hip hop, ballroom, and various obscure styles.
What kind of pointe shoe do you wear?
I currently am using a Bloch pointe shoe, maybe a Serenade?  I am ambivalent about it, although I like it a lot better since I made it a 3/4 shank, but I’m not dancing on pointe enough to complain, or spend too much time finding the perfect fit.  My all-time favorite shoe was a Capezio Prelude but I don’t think they make them anymore.
Do you have a favorite ballet:
Of the classics, I like Sleeping Beauty.  I haven’t seen enough live contemporary ballet to really choose a piece from that genre.  My favorite modern company is Alvin Ailey. All that said, in general I prefer smaller, local companies’ work to their larger, more famous contemporaries.  I feel more invested in watching when I know a company has roots in the community.
What’s your favorite ballet/dance step:
I love turns in ballet, especially traveling turns.  In dance in general I love floor work and really athletic choreography.
Tell us, why do you dance?
I can’t imagine not dancing.  I get twitchy if I go too long without using my body, and no other movement practice brings me as much joy and satisfaction.  I love the combination of athleticism and soul-searching artistry.  I love discovering new things about my body in every class and rehearsal.  I love that I can offer so much and still have so much to learn.  I love the sheer physicality of dance, and I love the creative outlet.
OTHER…
What other jobs/activities/life pursuits are you involved in?
I own my own studio, The Dance Barn, in Stanardsville, VA.  My husband and I own Sweet Dog Farm, where he raises pastured poultry as well as goats, dogs, cats, and kids.  We home school our four children, ages 11 months to 8 years old.  I perform and create work as an independent dancer/choreographer.  I love to read.  I am constantly striving to live with less impact on the earth, and with a greater focus on local, sustainable living and community.
What other talents or passions do you have?
I can tie shoelaces in a bow with my toes.
Anything else you’d like to express: I am thrilled to be working so closely with Charlotteville Ballet.  Since I moved to this area in 2003 I have wondered why Charlottesville didn’t already have a professional ballet company, and it is really exciting to be involved with this growing group of amazing dancers.  It is positively decadent as a choreographer to work with professionals on a regular basis!
I am especially looking forward to bringing together some of the Charlottesville Ballet dancers with local modern dancers in a new work I’m creating called Ordinary Joy.  We will be performing the piece at Miki Liszt’s First Friday Series on September 3rd at McGuffey Arts Center.  I also hope to do a Greene County showing in The Dance Barn’s studio theatre!

NERDY BALLET QUESTIONS
Tell us about your dance background and training:
I started dancing when I was 3 years old after my parents took me to see a local production of The Nutcracker (I was convinced that I would be dancing the lead, Clara, by the time Christmas rolled around next year…turns out I had no idea how difficult ballet would be). By the time I was 14, it was clear that I wanted and needed more professional training than I was able to receive in my hometown. My parents and I decided that, challenging as it would be, I needed to move somewhere that I could focus all of my efforts on ballet. I found a fantastic ballet school 2 hours away from home, and moved into my dance teacher’s basement. I danced all day, and home schooled myself through high school at night. During summers, I attended many renowned ballet schools’ programs- Ballet West, Houston Ballet, American Ballet Theater NY, Atlanta Ballet, Juilliard, and Richmond Ballet. When I was 18, I was offered a position as a company trainee with Richmond Ballet, which I accepted. I performed with Richmond Ballet for two seasons. I also met Charlottesville Ballet co-directors Sara Jansen and Emily Mott while living in Richmond. I was thrilled to receive a company contract with C’Ville Ballet, and this upcoming season will be my third dancing with the company.
What genres of dance do you enjoy?
As cliche as it sounds, I honestly enjoy almost ALL genres of dance. When I was younger, I was a bit of a “bun-head”– my main interest was classical ballet. As the years have passed though, I’ve realized how fantastic and amazing the diversity of dance can be.
What kind of pointe shoe do you wear?
Currently, I wear Freed Studio 1, size 5.5 D.
Do you have a favorite ballet:
I love so many ballets that it’s hard for me to pick a couple as absolute favorites. I guess I’d have to say George Balanchine’s Serenade is definitely one of my favorite ballets I’ve ever danced. It’s such a beautiful piece… and the music is stunning. Each time I performed it, I was nearly in tears by  the end. A more contemporary ballet that I love is Jiri Kylian’s Petit Mort. I haven’t had the pleasure of dancing it (yet!), but I’ve watched the video of Netherlands Dance Theater performing it countless times. Similar to Serenade, one of the things that is so striking about Petit Mort is the musicality of the choreography. It’s almost as though the music exists purely for the dance, and the dance exists for the music. Petit Mort also has AMAZING use of props. Check it out on YouTube!

What’s your favorite ballet/dance step:
My favorite thing to do is jump. Specifically, I love to leap. Give me a grand allegro with a bunch of saut de chats and I’m set.
Tell us, why do you dance?
This is a tricky question to answer… I’ve been thinking about it for several days; trying to figure out how to describe why I, personally, dance. Basically, what it comes down to is that I dance because I have to.  I’m hesitant to use the phrase “have to” for fear that it tends to make one think of something forced or unpleasant. What I’m saying has nothing to do with unpleasantness or something unnatural– I dance because I can’t live without it.  I can’t imagine NOT dancing.  I fell in love with it at an early age and it has become an integral part of who I am. I love the physicality of ballet– working daily on perfecting some small thing that can never actually be perfect. I love the artistry, finding new ways to express myself, or to express a feeling or a thought or…anything really. I especially love performing. When I’m onstage, the world seems to make sense. It’s as though everything else has melted away and it’s just me and the audience. Through all of the hard work, through all of the ups and downs, it’s the performances that make it all worthwhile.
OTHER
What other jobs/activities/academic pursuits are you involved in? In addition to dancing with Charlottesville Ballet, I teach for an education outreach program called Minds In Motion. Basically, I teach a 45 minute long “movement-based” class once a week to all public city fourth graders. The students work all year and present a performance (with over 300 dancers onstage!) to the public each spring. Not only has it been a huge success, but it is extremely gratifying work.
I also attend PVCC part time, knocking my general education credits out of the way so that when I decide I’d like to go to school I have a head start on things.
What other talents or passions do you have? Anyone who knows me at all will tell you that I’m obsessed with animals. I grew up with lots of cats and dogs, and simply can’t get enough of them. I currently have a pet bunny named Bunny (original, I know), and visit the SPCA weekly to interact with all of the fantastic critters they give a home to.
Anything else you’d like to express: As nice as it is to have the summer off, I’m itching to get back to work in the studio! C’mon, September….
